The work of Sarah Granett (New Jersey) explores cycles of building up and breaking down in a painting-derived practice encompassing drawing, sculpture, video, photography and painting. At home within a language of eccentric abstraction, the works may be characterized by their rangey color, awkward material layerings and provisional rhythms. Through repetition of both material and hand, Jessie Henson (New York) establishes a sense of time and space in her installations and embroidered works. Her works distort the comfort of interior space with the vastness of landscape in ways that evoke longing. Utilizing deconstructive processes, Abbie Miller (Wyoming) reconfigures familiar objects and materials to imbue a sense of dislocation. In her sprawling sculptures, sewing becomes an intimate and ideological practice that creates new identities through fusing the visionary and the real. Brought together for this show by their linking concerns for materiality and abstraction, the artists thoughtfully investigate, in both experimental and cultivated ways, process through material. The use of fabric, yarn, thread and everyday objects is common for each, whether quietly manipulated, purposefully altered by paint or structurally reconsidered. Through the patient exploration of materials and a desire for abstract understanding, an intimacy emerges in their work. Bay 10 Project Space In conjunction with Intimate Abstract, Bay 10 Project Space at Big Medium will host a project by Sarah Granett.
